Discussion:
IMAP-notifier

Hi,

Has anyone been lucky enough to find an e-mail notifier that works
properly with IMAP? That is: checks specified folders and not just the
inbox?

As much as I love Mulberry, I feel that it has a long way to go when it
comes to notification of new mail (I realize that it is much more
sophisticated than probably any other IMAP-capable mailer).

I've also struggled with this and blogged about it here:

IMAP Tip: Use a backup-all mailbox
<http://deflexion.com/2006/01/imap-tip-use-backup-all-mailbox>

Here's an excerpt:

"I've been looking for a good way to monitor all my incoming
mailboxes. There are a number of options..."

What I do is not the best solution, but it works for me and
maybe it will be useful to someone else. I'm curious to learn
what other people do!

Thanks, Nancy. I'm afraid I don't quite get it. What is the benefit of
Pine monitoring one mailbox instead of Mulberry monitoring multiple
mailboxes? Does Pine offer more informative notification?

It doesn't need to be Pine monitoring the backup-all mailbox, it
could be Mulberry or any IMAP client. The advantage is that
every single email message that arrives at one of my email
addresses is listed in the backup-all mailbox index (aka Items
panel in Mulberry). I don't use any alerts and instead
periodically manually CMD-TAB over to my backup-all window and
see what's been happening in my email world. I know it's not for
everyone, but it works for me. A backup-all mailbox has other
advantages too -- e.g. a backup of all my email!

Hope this makes sense,
Nancy

I may not be understanding your question correctly, but I have dragged
several IMAP folders into my "Check Favourite" cabinet and applied an
alert to that cabinet to check every 3 minutes. Works great for me.

Would this help?

Also, ctrl+shift+L will immediately update all folders in favorite cabinet.

That is what I have been doing up til now - but, first of all, I hate
having to click Mulberry away when an alert pops up. I would prefer a
small pop up in a corner of my screen which vanished automatically
after a couple of seconds. It would also be nice if that popup
contained info on sender, subject and mailbox. I'm really amazed to
see that no mail notifier seems capable of this (except, perhaps, for
the notifier someone wrote for FastMail. But I never been able to get
that to work - and it only checks for unread messages - not recent
ones).

Best wishes,
Jannik Lindquist

Incidentally, that is exactly what Thunderbird does. :-)

I just keep it running in the background, and the pop-ups alert me when
I have new mail in any of my IMAP folders (as configured). No clicking
necessary unless you want to read the message. They are expanding the
amount of information displayed in the pop-up in version 2.0. See:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=204406

They will have some other interesting notification options in version
2.0 also. For all the gory details and cool screen shots, see:

I don't know about subject, but I use procmail server-side to file each
sender to his own folder, and add the folder to my Check Favourites. My
Inbox only has "unusual" mail, mostly spam. (I have a separate folder for
"expected junk" from website subscriptions.)

I configure different alert sounds for regular and "important" mail.
(Actually, I have it say "important mail arrived" when one of those folders
gets something. Regular mail just dings.)

I see. Actually, I seem have found a solution that works for me - with
Gmail. I am currently redirecting copies of my mail to my
Gmail-account and have set Google Talk to notify me of new mail. This
gives me sender, subject and a snippet of the message in a discrete
popup. No indication of folder, of course, but I can usually guess
that from the other information.

In fact, I am tempted to switch to Gmail completely. The way Gmail
works, the inbox can actually compensate for the lacking ability to
check for recent messages, since all new mail can appear in the Inbox
- even though it's also "filtered to a folder" (being labeled). Gmails
grouping of messages into "conversations" prevent the Inbox from being
to cluttered - and it also has the effect that new messages in any
given discussion always appear in their context even though that
thread previously has been read and archived. This works absolutely
great for me.

My biggest problem with a complete switch to Gmail is that it's very
difficult to move all my old mail into Gmail. I have not been
succesful with the various utilities available for this.

Oh, I see. I have my alert just make a noise so that I don't have to
dismiss a pop-up, but I don't have a good answer for the other part.
I'm used to just alt-tab'ing over to Mulberry and opening the
mailboxes that are now coloured RED when I hear the new-mail alert.

Maybe Thunderbird with one of its numerous plug-ins has that capability?

Sorry I couldn't help.

I have my alert set so that only a small icon shows up next to the clock.
No popup. The only difference with what you are saying is that the icon
stays there forever. It never times out.

To achieve this effect you need
"Use Foreground alert" unchecked
"Use Background alert" unchecked
"Show Icon in Taskbar" checked
"Play sound" however you prefer
"Speak" however you prefer
"Open Mailbox Window" unchecked

See attached screenshot

Thank for answering. Well, even without the screenshot (!), I can tell
you that this isn't quite what I am after. As I said, I am looking for
a notifier that will tell me the sender, the subject and the mailbox of
the new message.

Just for the record I did attach the screenshot. This was an e-mail sent
via Mulberry. I suspect Yahoo removes the attachments when it posts the msg
to the group.

Not sure if it would have done the same if I composed the msg via the web
interface.
